geometry - Remove handles in a triangle mesh -

i use euler's formula compute genus number. https://math.stackexchange.com/questions/85163/finding-the-topological-genus-of-a-triangulated-surface because triangle mesh not closed, genus number should 1. have meshes genus number greater 1. there software can highlight handles? hope remove handles, have little experience it. can can provide links or papers it?

in fact, use 1 3d scanner scan 1 object , obtain 1 triangle mesh. resultant mesh has no holes, not closed , object doesn't has handle. expect genus number should 1. genus number larger 1. think should fix it. load mesh meshlab, mesh looks normal. i　hope identify handles using software if such software exist.

i might 6 months late, looking area related meshes , came across post. link above research know identifying (and removing!) handles in meshes, suited needs.
